News 12: Precious’ actress speaks in BK about issues in movie
(08/17/10) BED-STUY - “Precious” actress Gabourey Sidibe joined a panel of other actors from the movie tonight to watch and discuss the film that shot her to stardom.
The Brooklyn-born actress and her colleagues spoke with the community about AIDS awareness and some of the other serious issues that the film took on.
Sidibe received an Academy Award nomination for her role.

Ephraim is an actor who had a small role in the Oscar-award winning movie “Precious.”
Tonight, he brought together the stars of the movie, including Gabourey Sidibe and showed the film in Tompkins Park.
Ephraim started an organization called “Chillin on da Corner and Beyond,” which is a cultural series designed to empower children, stimulate their minds and ultimately make a difference.

Gabourey Sidibe and members of the “Precious” cast served as panelists at the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Recreational Center in New York City for the “Life Is Precious” event. The ladies hosted a screening of the film, and even had free health screenings available.

About Chillin On Da CornerChillin on da Corner & Beyond is an outdoor film screening series that showcases feature length, documentaries and short films in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn community. The goal is to empower this community to bridge the gap that divides socially & economically from other communities. Chillin on da Corner has made a commitment to showcase films that visually stimulate minds, inspire change within and transform the perceptions of the entire community. The mission is to go beyond merely showcasing films and to provide an overall experience in arts, culture, health, education, job training, self empowerment and other resources that deprive underprivileged communities.
In urban areas chilling on the corner has a negative connotation of hanging out and being mischief. We wanted to take the same phrase and apply it to watching films in the parking lots, centers and parks near the corners as a community, which will inspire beyond the negative influences.
This will start a conversation, open minds, bring out fellow supporters and role models within the community.
